Testimony of a Second Birthday
We’re excited to share this “second birthday” story from Matthew, who will receive a free book of his choice from our Inspired Faith collection. Thank you for sharing your story with us, Matthew!
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect…1 Peter 3:15
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11
After reading the blog post on Second Birth, I felt compelled to share my story. In my weaker times, I wish it was more exciting and dramatic. However, I am reminded that the best testimony to God’s faithfulness is often found in a quiet life of obedience.
I was born in a typical midwestern suburban town. When I was eight years old I distinctly remember my sunday school teacher telling us, “Do you know how long it will feel like between dying and going to heaven or hell? Just like this…” and she blinked in an exaggerated manner. “You won’t have a chance to think… once you die, your mind will have been made up. Who would like to become a Christian and go to Heaven?” Feeling fearful of the alternative, I chose Heaven.
Not until High school did I really discover what it meant to be a Christian. A shy and insecure person deep down, I was always scared of judgment by others. My church gave me a place to be myself and form real friendships. I also met mentors who discipled me in my walk with Christ. Not every day was perfect, but God really revealed Himself to me, and Christianity became a community led by God.
I attended a Christian school, and further refined my faith. In college, I studied the Bible and psychology. It was challenging, studying psychology, because many people lose their faith in the process. In fact, I recall a particular research paper reporting that psychology and sociology were the two most secular majors in all universities, causing more people to lose faith than to gain it. I had a difficult time of doubting, and found it hard to accept that God would have a place for me in the world.
Later, though, I was mentored by a couple of business professors who explained how I can serve God through my work and relationships. See, missions is not necessarily about going halfway around the globe to preach in remote villages. Missions is inviting your neighbor to eat dinner, counseling a coworker through a divorce, inviting a workout partner to church, and so much more. The great commission was to be Jesus wherever you are. Now, in my professional and personal life, my goal is to do just that.
